Pathway Programs

The TOEFL ITP is a useful adjunct to an English pathway program. If a high stakes English test is not necessary, a closely related, easily administered and valid substitute can add significant value.

1. •A college can test students on entry, or the pathway course can provide TOEFL ITP results to the college
   

2. •The college’s understanding of TOEFL PBT scores and scales simplifies use of ITP results - same scores, same scales, same meaning.
   

3. •The test evaluates skills in Listening Comprehension, Structure and Written Expression, and Reading Comprehension - in an academic context.
   

4. •There are multiple parallel forms for retesting, so an English school can assess student ongoing progress.
   

5. •Test can be done on any date, and can score on the spot for quick results.
   

Despite the similarities with TOEFL PBT, the TOEFL ITP test is not a public or official test - this means it does not have a new secure form issued for every testing session, and is administered by a school instead of ETS. It should not be used for a high stakes decision.

Note: The TOEFL ITP does not include Speaking or Writing tests.

If a school uses PBT results now and switches to TOEFL PBT, they would lose the “Test of Written English” essay test by using ITP instead. They can provide their own assessments alongside the TOEFL ITP results, or can add another Speaking & Writing test with an essay task.
