Common ETS Terms


  1. L&R Test: Listening & Reading Test

  2. S&W Test: Speaking & Writing Test

  3. 4-facet tests: L&R and S&W Tests

  4. Institutional Tests: Tested by a school, the results belong to the school

  5. IP (or ITP): Institutional Testing Program uses Institutional Tests

  6. SP: Secure Program. Tested by a representative of ETS, under secure conditions.

  7. Public Tests: Continually renewed test forms, tested securely (SP) on set dates, open to the public. Aka Official Tests or Open TOEIC Tests

  8. PBT: Paper Based Test

  9. iBT: Internet Based Test


Tests:

  1. The TOEIC Test: ETS’s paper based L&R test of Workplace English
    (formerly known as the “Test of English for International Communication”)

  2. The TOEIC S&W Test: ETS’s computer based S&W test of Workplace English

  3. Public TOEIC Test: Official, secure TOEIC Test with new forms each administration

  4. TOEIC IP Test: Institutional TOEIC Test, for school and companies internal use

  5. The TOEFL Test family: ETS’s family of Academic English tests
    (the “Test of English as a Foreign Language”)

  6. Official TOEFL Test: The secure TOEFL tests, with new forms each administration.

  7. TOEFL iBT: ETS’s main TOEFL Test. 4-facets, internet based.

  8. TOEFL CBT: Computer based test, no longer developed.

  9. TOEFL PBT: Paper Based test where required, still under development.

  10. TWE: Test of Written English, a 30minute essay test included with the TOEFL PBT.

  11. TSE: Test of Spoken English, short speaking test option where iBT unavailable.

  12. TOEFL ITP: Institutional, Paper Based test (a la TOEFL PBT) for school internal use.
    (aka TOEFL ITP Level 1)

  13. TOEFL ITP Level 2: Academic English test for High Beginners to Intermediate students (formerly known as Pre-TOEFL Test)

  14. TOEIC Bridge: Workplace/General English test for High Beginners to Intermediate.

  15. Classic TOEIC: The previous version of TOEIC, still available for specific purposes
